A Bold Religious Initiative for Peace
In a significant diplomatic effort, the Catholic Church through the CENCO and the Protestant Church via the ECC have embarked on consultations to forge a peace agreement in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This initiative was officially presented to President Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi on June 21, 2025, signifying a pivotal step towards national reconciliation.
Dialogue at the Heart of the Citadel
The discussions between church leaders and President Tshisekedi transpired at the Cité de l’Union Africaine, lasting two intense hours. Mgr Donatien Nshole of CENCO and Pastor André Bokondoa of ECC conveyed the outcome of their consultations, highlighting the President’s openness to forming a joint team to further explore this peace pact.
An Ecumenical Response to Ongoing Crisis
Since February 2025, the churches have engaged in an extensive dialogue involving national leaders, local communities, and international partners. Their efforts aim to construct a consensus that can navigate the DRC out of its current political and security quagmire, confronting ongoing challenges such as the M23 rebellion backed by Rwanda.
Political Tensions and Endorsements
The initiative has evoked mixed reactions. While government officials express skepticism regarding ecclesiastical influence, opposition figures, including Martin Fayulu, have endorsed the churches’ approach as a credible alternative to the existing governmental course.
Navigating Challenges of National Coordination
For this initiative to succeed, the churches must unite various stakeholders, from political entities to civil society and security forces. Pastor Éric Nsenga describes the effort as a ‘moral and social reconstruction,’ which could stabilize the nation if given proper institutional and political support.
The Enduring Role of the Church
With a historical precedent of mediating conflicts and assisting socio-politically, the church’s influence in the DRC remains indispensable. President Tshisekedi’s acceptance of a follow-up commission suggests an awareness of this reality, though the practicalities of this collaboration are yet undeveloped.
