A New Milestone in Togo’s Industrial Strategy
The inauguration of Star Garments’ textile factory on June 18th by President Faure Gnassingbé heralds a transformative stage in Togo’s industrial strategy. Embodying the goals of the 2018-2022 National Development Plan, this venture, situated at the Plateforme Industrielle d’Adétikopé (PIA), is aimed at leveraging the nation’s robust assets including a dynamic youth and the prominent maritime hub at the Port of Lomé. Togolese authorities expect the employment of over 4,520 individuals by 2030 as a DIRECT consequence of this initiative.
Manuella Modoukpe Santos, Togo’s Minister of Industry, elucidates the government’s vision: positioned as a logical and maritime prime platform in Africa, Togo stands on the threshold of private investment and sustainable job creation, driven partly by the strategic positioning of this textile initiative.
Economic Boost through Cotton and Textile Development
With an investment of 13 billion FCFA and backing from the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the Star Garments factory reflects a significant leap in Togo’s cotton industry — a critical segment accounting for 1 to 4.3% of the national GDP. By converting raw cotton into high-quality apparel, the country seeks to retain a greater share of its value chain that was previously missed through export-dominated practices.
Olivier Buyoya, IFC’s Regional Director for West Africa, notes, ‘We’re proud to have guided Star Garments in their inaugural African endeavor. The facility stands as a symbol of growth potential for West Africa, no longer solely exporting raw cotton but enabling local transformation and the production of globally competitive garments.’
Environmental Commitment and Anticipated Impacts
The Star Garments plant commits to rigorous environmental standards, underscoring the governmental emphasis on sustainable industrialization. As Togo produces approximately 66,000 tonnes of cotton annually, this new facility is anticipated to add over 40% in value through local transformation, significantly amplifying the country’s economic footprint.
As the factory begins operation, the expectation is not just of increased employment but also an elevation in the industrial skills of the workforce, ultimately contributing to Togo’s aspirations of becoming an industrial hub underpinned by prudent environmental stewardship.
